ECS 153 Projects

Introduction

Topics You will have an opportunity to pursue a topic in computer security in depth. Your project could fall into one of two categories:

Teams You will form a group of 2 people. Although I will not categorically rule out solo teams, I expect that working in groups will allow you to tackle more substantial research issues. You may use the class mailing list to find project partners, or I may help you find a partner.

Presentation You will present your project on a poster at 4-6pm on Wednesday, March 14, in 1131 Kemper. You will also submit a project report by Monday, March 19. The report should list your team members, be no more than five pages, and be formatted in PDF. Submit your report on a CSIF Linux machine using

Example project topics

Here are some examples of project topics. Although you are welcome to choose from these topics if they interest you, you are in no way restricted to them.

Privacy against search engines Search engines make it easy for other people to search for your web documents. However, if you have some web documents that you don't want others to find through search engines, how to prevent search engines from finding or indexing these web documents?

Defending typo attacks Scam artists (or entrepreneurs pursuing their American Dreams) have registered many domain names that are likely typos of legitimate domain names. When you happen to type one of these typos in the URL, your browser will go to their web sites, which often have questionable contents. How to cut the lifeline of these Typo Millionaires?

Attacks and defenses Pick an attack. Investigate how it works, implement the attack, and propose how to defend against it.

Defending against malware Malware, such as viruses, worms, adware, and spyware, has become arguably the worst problem for home users. How to defend against malware, including detection, prevention, and recovery?

I will add more later ...
