ECS 275B ADVANCED COMPUTER GRAPHICS (4) II

Prerequisite: Course ECS 175 or ECS 177 or ECS 178

Grading: Letter; homework (20%), project (40%), examinations (40%)

Catalog Description:
Advanced topics in computer graphics and geometric modeling. Topics taken from advanced research papers in computer graphics, image synthesis, visualization and geometric modeling. Discussion of current research in the field. Offered in alternate years.

Goals:
Solidify the foundation given in Course 275A, by studying advanced topics pertaining to raster graphics. Introduce the student to current research topics in the field. Prepare students to understand and conduct research in this area.

Expanded Course Description:

  1. Ray Tracing Models
    1. Extensive discussion of ray casting and the algorithms that have been developed from this basic procedure, including distribution ray tracing, and forward ray tracing.
    2. Ray-surface intersection techniques
    3. Discussion of current research in the area
  2. Advanced Modeling Techniques
    1. Modeling techniques for definition of complex scenes
    2. Procedural methods, constructive solid geometry, boundary methods
    3. Discussion of how these methods integrate with various rendering algorithms
  3. Suffix trees and linear time algorithms for computing them
  4. Anti-Aliasing
    1. Advanced anti-aliasing techniques
    2. Screen space subdivision methods, Crow's techniques
    3. Study of current research in the field
  5. Introduction to animation techniques for computer generated images
