On-Line Science with Terabytes of Data

The talk will present an overview of the SkyServer, an interactive astronomy workbench, built in collaboration with Jim Gray (MS BARC). The data is from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, stored in a 2.4TB SQL Server database. We have designed and implemented an extensive spatial library to handle the "geospatial" queries required. This environment also enables us to experiment and prototype web services related to the Virtual Observatory, an emerging international federation of large astronomy archives.
