Entropy Coding Revisited for the Networked World

Entropy coding techniques are widely used in communications and networking systems. Traditional entropy coding approaches were designed without considering the impact of packetization, transmission errors and losses and malicious encoders and nodes in the network on the securiy, reliability and efficiency of the overall system. Recent joint source and channel coding research has, to a large extent, focused on the allocation of coding rates without adapting the coding scheme to the requirements when used for communication over networks.

In this talk, we will present our results of our research on adapting entropy coding schemes for application to network communications. We will show how reversible variable length codes can be designed to combat transmission error without sacrificing coding efficiency, how side information (e.g. available from packet headers) can be used to correct transmission errors without channel coding, and how such side information can be used to improve coding efficiency when applied in the error fress cases. We will also present a noval arithemtic coder that combines entropy coding and encryption at a complexity that is lower then when compression and encryption are done separately. We will conclude the talk with a brief outline of the theoretical open issues in these areas.

Bio

Dr. Jiangtao (Gene) Wen is the Director of Video Codec Technology at Mobilygen Corp, a venture funded fabless semiconductor company based in Santa Clara, CA, where he is playing an instrumental role in the development of the industry's lowest power consuming SD and HD H.264 codec solutions. Prior to joining Mobilygen, Dr. Wen worked as the CTO of Morphbius Technology Inc. and the Principal Scientist of PacketVideo Corp. Dr. Wen is a world-renowned expert in multimedia communication over hostile networks, video coding and communications. He has authored many widely referenced papers in related fields. Products deploying technologies that Dr. Wen developed are currently used by over 20 million customers worldwide. Dr. Wen is a Senior Member of IEEE and holds 7 granted US patents with numberous others pending
