Computer networks are essential to the success of modern computing ecosystems. New applications such as the Internet of Things, cyber-physical systems, and big data analytics push the limits of networks by requiring pervasive, fast, responsive, low-cost, and energy-efficient access. These challenges make administering modern networks an increasingly difficult task. As a result, my research develops a comprehensive approach to network management by designing, analyzing, and deploying techniques to ensure the operational efficiency of the network. This talk first describes my work in datacenter network management. Specifically, I highlight how administrators can deploy simple, lightweight changes at the edge of their networks to increase performance in multi-tenant datacenters. These techniques minimize the impact of network congestion, which has been shown to severely impact performance, by effectively load balancing the network at fast speeds and virtualizing TCP congestion control. Next, I briefly overview my past research in mobile computing and wireless network management. Finally, I conclude by showing how my past experiences will drive future avenues of research.
