2005 Student Workshop Call for Papers

Workshop Saturday, October 8th, Rec Pool Lodge

Since the Summer of 1998, the Computer Science Department sponsors a Student Workshop on Computing (SWOC). The purpose is to highlight the results of academic research by the students, and to promote the exchange of ideas among students working in research areas related to computing. With the success of the previous ones, the workshop this year will be held on October 8th at the Recreation Pool Lodge.

Submissions

All students are invited to submit 2-page short paper, describing recent and continuing work. Submissions are encouraged in any area of computing. Furthermore, non-traditional submissions in related computing fields are encouraged. All papers will be reviewed by the Technical Program Committee, whose members are graduate students in the department in all research areas.

Selected papers will appear in the proceedings of the workshop, which will subsequently appear as a Technical Report of the Computer Science Department. Approximately 10-15 of the submitted abstracts will be selected for presentation. In addition to considering technical merit, the Program Committee will select presentations that provide an interesting cross-section of the community. Papers submitted shortly after the deadline may be included in the proceedings, but will not necessarily be considered for presentation.

The paper should describe the essential ideas in the research and have a short bibliograpy that includes any papers or technical memoranda on which the abstract is based. The first page should begin with a title, the author's name(s) and e-mail address(es). Joint submissions by students are acceptable, but the student making the presentation should be listed as first author. Papers and presentations should be aimed at a general computer science audience.

Please e-mail your abstract (Postscript or PDF only) to Chao Gui. Requests for further information should also be e-mailed to Chao Gui.

Format: Papers should be formatted according to the ACM SIG Proceedings templates. You may omit the copyright notice and its block of space at the bottom of the first column. You may also use these class files, which have been modified from the original ACM format (the space at the bottom of the first column is removed and they print naturally onto letter size paper): ACM standard and alternate. Papers written in LaTeX should be compiled with pdflatex or pslatex for online readability. The printed proceedings will be in black-and-white, but color will be displayed in the electronic version.

Cover Design

We are also seeking designs and images for the cover of the printed proceedings that relate to computer science. Past images on the cover include an early encryption machine and an image from a visualization project demonstrating a new technique. All ideas are welcome. Please submit images (Postscript or PDF only) to Chao Gui. Note that the printed proceedings will be in black and white.
