University Requirements 2012-13

Entry-Level Writing Requirement

May be satisfied by any of the following:

  • By earning a score of 680 or higher on the new SAT Reasoning Exam or on the old SAT II Writing Test.
  • By earning a score of 3, 4, or 5 on the College Board Advanced Placement Examination in English.
  • By earning a score of 5 or above on the International Baccalaureate’s High Level English A Examination
  • Enter the University with credentials showing the completion of an acceptable 3-semester or 4-quarter unit college-level course in English composition with a grade of C or better.
  • Write a passing essay on the Analytical Writing Placement Examination. If requirement not satisfied, enroll in Workload 57 during the first quarter of enrollment or as soon thereafter as space is available. Pass the Analytical Writing Placement Examination offered as the final for Workload 57. Workload 57 counts as 4.5 workload units on your study list and towards minimum progress but does not count as units towards graduation.

American History and Institutions Requirement

May be satisfied by any of the following:

  • Complete one high school unit in American history, or 1/2 high school unit in American history and 1/2 high school unit in civics or American government, with a grade of C or better in each course.
  • Present evidence that the requirement has been accepted as satisfied at another UC campus or at another college whose credits are acceptable for transfer to UC Davis.
  • Successful completion of the Advanced Placement Examination in American History.
  • Complete an acceptable UC Davis course as described in the General Catalog on page 94.

General Education Requirement (GE)

The General Education requirements are as follows for new and transfer students. Transfer students who have completed the Transfer Core Curriculum (TCC) or the Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC) are exempted from GE except CSE majors, who must complete additional College of Enginering GE requirements.

  • 6 GE courses in topical breadth - 3 courses in Arts and Humanities and 3 courses in Social Science.
  • 3 GE courses in writing experience - courses to be completed after Entry-Level Writing Requirement has been satisfied.
  • 1 GE course in social-cultural diversity.
  • CSE majors (not CS majors) must complete a total of 33 units (combined total for Arts and Humanities and Social Sciences) of GE. At least 2 GE courses must be upper division.
