Professor Phil Rogaway, with co-authors Kenny Paterson (Royal Holloway University of London) and Mihir Bellare (UCSD), were awarded the Privacy Enhancing Technology Award for their 2014 paper, “Security of Symmetric Encryption Against Mass Surveillance.” Inspired by revelations about the National Security Agency and other governments’ efforts to subvert commercial encryption schemes, they study how one can know when an encryption scheme has been compromised and how to define schemes that cannot be compromised.
