Preamble, (November 1, 1999)

This is the report of the subcommittee on bioinformatics, a subcommittee of the UCD Genomics/Bioinformatics FTE Proposal. Excerpts from this report were included in the Genomics report written by Alan Bennett and submitted to the Provost in April 1999. Some proposed implementation details have changed as the genomics proposal evolved since then. In particular, the proposed bioinformatics center has become merged with the genome center, and the position of Associate Director of the Genome Center, in charge of Bioinformatics, has been created and is now being advertised (see Science Nov. 5, 1999). That position was not enumerated in this report.
