The types of problems that use this approach are very large scale and cannot be attacked from a single point. We use this process to ensure the simulation is proceeding 'correctly' as the days and weeks of processing continues with complex multivariate mesh structures consisting of hundreds of millions of cells. We also use this process to share results with colleagues and demonstrate results to other scientists, management and others. I will discuss tradeoffs, cost, performance, and integration into the users' overall problem solving environment.
