Assignment 1 Detailed Requirements

Basic Description:

Build a simple scene using at least five modeling primitives (e.g. cube, sphere, etc.).  Shade the primitives with different materials and create a simple animation of them interacting (about 10 seconds, at least three objects should be animated).  The point of this assignment is to become familiar with Maya, so the emphasis is more on completing the task, but try to put together an interesting and engaging scene.

Detailed Requirements:

Meet the requirements above (5 shaded primitives, animated in a 10 second piece) plus be sure to do the following:

-        use at least three different materials and colors to distinguish your primitives

o   experiment with different kinds of shaders (e.g. Blinn, Lambert; check out a ramp shader)

-        adjust the tangents in your animation for at least one object

-        modify the shape of at least three of your primitives (e.g. warp a sphere in some interesting way).  At least one of these changes should be done by moving vertices in component mode.

Submission Instructions:

-        You should submit your entire Maya project folder.  All additional files (e.g. the readme.txt) should be in the root of that folder.

-        N.B.  Name your project folder with your name and “A1”.  E.g.  I would call mine “A1_MichaelNeff”.  This is how we will identify your submission.

-        Include a brief readme file that identifies how you have met each of the requirements.  You can also include any problems you could not resolve or particular features you would like us to notice.  The file should be called “readme.txt” and included in the main project directory of your Maya files.  Include your full name and student number in this file.

-        Create a playblast of your animation.  Make sure it is saved within the Maya project file.

-        Optional:  We have not learned to do this yet, but you can also submit a rendered movie of your animation if you like.

-        Once everything is ready, follow the instructions below to copy it to the submissions folder.  Open the classes folder on the desktop, find the TCS 130 folder and open the drop off folder.  Copy your entire project folder over to this folder (just drag and drop it).  If you need to update the submission, just copy another folder and update your name with v2, v3, etc.  (e.g. “A1_MichaelNeff-v2”).  We will only mark the last submission.

-        Keep a backup of your work in case something goes wrong.

Grading Criteria:

-        Have all of the required features been included?  How effectively are they used?

-        Is the overall timing of the piece reasonable?

-        What is the aesthetic quality of the piece and how much creativity has been shown?  (This will be given less weight for this assignment than in future assignments.  Aim to be engaging.)

-        Have the submission instructions been followed?
