Are you understanding the lectures? ----------------------------------- Most students indicated that they understood most of the lecture material. Many students wished that more lecture materials (eg., good lecture notes) were on the Web. "The lectures go too fast therefore its hard to understand. Try to explain slower." "Following the book more closely would help out GREATLY" "Sometimes you speak using million dollar words and you're hard to understand." (and yet I am still waiting for payment). "Semi. It's a little bit fast" "I try, but unfortunately I don't - most of the time" "Nice examples of the topics (and applications) would help greatly" "Yes, but there [isn't] any way to catch up if a person doesn't know any one in class." How are the homeworks going? How long do you spend on them week? ----------------------------------------------------------------- Most students felt that the homeworks were too hard. At the same time, many indicated a time expenditure of 3-4 hours (which is certainly not excessive). "Do not understand point breakdown in homework". "Some of the hw questions are unclear, for example, some symbol and terms I never seen" "Slightly too long (about 2-3 hours)" "The homework, in my opinion, should be the part that not only indirectly forces us to study but also raise our grades" How are discussion sections going? ---------------------------------- Many students expressed a desire for more help on the HWs. Most students liked the TA (Conrad) and thought he was helpful. Some students thought that Conrad need to go over the material better with me before discussion section. "Very well, Conrad is great" Are you having fun? ------------------- Sadly, most said no, though a fair number said yes. "No, I don't consider failing & ruining my entire future fun" "sometimes it's frustrating when you think for hours and nothing comes up that can help" "the class is one of the most interesting I've had in a long time." "YES! (but this is no reflection upon my ability to think logically, ==== unfortunately)" Further problems, suggestions, comments, ideas: ----------------------------------------------- Many students wished that we had a book that we followed more closely. Several people really disliked the grading of the quizzes (with negative points for wrong answers.) Several requests for more examples. "Were am I going to use this in real life?" "I always though CS mean programming & [the] workings of computers" (Well, you were wrong!) "Try to get some flow into lectures, ie 1 subject should lead to another" "Your class is the highlight of my day" "Can we drop one quiz" "I believe this is a big transition for myself and other students to think mathematically abstractly" "Write bigger. Use the rest of the board before you start erasing anything". "Speak slower, write LARGER" "Can you go a little bit slower?" "Definition sheet for the MT and final to study from?" "I think the midterm will test us on far too much (we've gone through so many concepts" "I hear tat this class is much tougher than the previous one. Not all of us have taken upper division mathematics" "Professor is great" (I approve of this comment!) "Please curve (in a big way) !!!!"
