Dr. Vladimir Filkov is a Professor of Computer Science and Radiology and Director of the CS AI for Health Initiative at UC Davis. He specializes in open source, generative AI and multimodal AI/ML for understanding complex phenomena in software development and biomedical research. He runs two labs: DECAL Lab, focusing on improving open source software sustainability, and AI for Health Lab, with focus on improving healthcare outcomes. With his students and collaborators around the world, he has published more than 150 scientific papers, and won many distinctions, including two test-of-time awards.

His latest work in Sustainability of Open Source Software has been supported by NSF, the Sloan Foundation, and Google, and is one of the key elements of the UC Open Source Programming Office (OSPO) spanning six UC campuses. His work in AI for Health has resulted in grants from the NIH and CTSA.

Prof Filkov is an ACM Distinguished Scientist and a UCD College of Engineering 2024 Outstanding Researcher. He was the inaugural Director of Translational Data Science at DataLab, 2000-2024, and is now a DataLab Fellow. He is the AI Advisor for the UCDH Center of Precision Medicine and UC Davis Grand Challenges, and Faculty advisor for CodeLab. He is also a startup advisor, and consultant.

February 2025: It was a great honor to give a Distinguished Lecture at CMU CS/S3D, on our ongoing work on OSS Sustainability. Video is available here.

October 2024: I was the General Chair of ASE 2024, which took place Oct 28 - Nov 1, 2024, in Sacramento. It was a year's worth of work by a lot of volunteers. Great to see all my friends, collaborators and meet new people during the event.
