ECS 20 – Discrete Mathematics for Computer Science – Fall 2021
Announcements (page last updated 12/13 at 3:45 pm)
- The final exam has been graded and scores have been released.
Here are histograms for the final and for overall scores. As you can see,
both are low, but especially the final.
- I computed totals using a spreadsheet, not Canvas, because Canvas couldn’t correctly handle
the extra credit, nor could it count homeworks equally and drop the lowest score.
That said, the correct totals were usually within a few points of what Canvas had computed.
A typed correct totals into the “override” field for Canvas,
but I don’t know if you see that.
- Letter grades have been assigned. They were generous; in many cases grades are one or even two steps
higher than where I actually think they should be. You owe the high grades in part to Chris Nitta,
who sent me some charts that showed just how much grade inflation we’ve been experiencing,
especially since COVID.
While I never thought it problematic to teach courses more demanding than most of my peers,
I have never wanted my grades to be substantially lower than what others assign.
- It’s been a tough term. Not just the class being difficult, I mean, but tough in deeper ways.
I think life feels heavy these days—for many, if not most, of us.
And I don’t think this is going to change any time soon.
A natural reaction is to turn inward.
But don’t.
Don’t be chasing grades, money, status,
or whatever it is that those around you just assume that you should chase.
What’s valuable is elsewhere.
- It’s been my pleasure being your teacher this last term.
You helped me get through it. Have a good break.
